“Mauritian Nights” in NS during the Taste of Mauritius Catering days…
2018 “Mauritian Night” in Nova Scotia – THE BEST YET!
It was indeed another fantastic cultural celebration in a Mauritian-inspired beautifully decorated setting of the St. John’s Anglican Church in Bedford, NS. Thank you to talented photographer Paul Darrow, as well as friends of Taste of Mauritius Peter Steeper and Patricia Lee for the photography!
“THE BEST Mauritian Night YET” here in Nova Scotia were the exact words from several guests on September 14 as we once again hosted yet another epic, colourful, beautiful and multi-layered Mauritian cuisine and culture evening in Halifax, NS!
There’s something about this island that gets under your skin and draws travellers back to Mauritius to experience what Mauritians know and love every day. anonymous
An honour to host this annually now in this part of Canada!
As always it was an incredibly positive, joyous and celebratory evening in once of the most gorgeous venue the Basinview, within the Bedford Basin Farmers Market in Halifax. It was everything we had hoped for and we couldn’t have been more please with the outcome, to this once again sold out event, from the hors d’oeuvres, the lavish spread of different dishes, the drinks, music, very special guest speakers and the incredible Solo Bharatanatyam Mauritian Group Sega dance performances who eventually brought the guests to join them on the dance floor (teaching them how to dance the Traditional Mauritian Sega!).
In addition to the culture-sharing experience, this event once again served as a chance to also “give back”, by giving our network of family, friends and amazing customers an opportunity to help others in need. The long-term goal for our “Mauritian Nights” in NS have always been to chose a different project/cause/charity every time we host it and donate the raised funds that evening to that very local group in Nova Scotia and another in Mauritius.
This year “The Adsum for Women and Children“, in Halifax NS, and the “Association for the Welfare of Orphans & Handicapped“, in Mauritius, were the recipients. We are pleased to announce that a Total Sum of $1,511.00 Canadian Dollars was raised the evening of September 14th from our Mauritian Night Raffle Ticket sales which included some phenomenal prizes generously donated by both Air Mauritius and La Pointe Villas (owned by the Wong family in Mauritius). We cannot thank our two Mauritian sponsors of the Charity aspect to the event enough for all their incredible generosity and for supporting us in this initiative… all for great causes.
THANK YOU to EVERYONE who were there in attendance that evening and for also supporting the charity portion of the evening as well. Special thank you and mention to Dr. Devarajen Veerassamy (from Mauritius) and Mrs. Lalini Veerassamy (making it all the way from Djibouti) for the brilliant presentation as our guest speakers of the evening. There are many more people who helped in the success of this event… ALL the volunteers; every single staff member (most of them being hard-working and dedicated Mauritian International University Students from both Saint Mary’s University and Dalhousie University) who worked very hard; close friends and family members; outside vendors, and of course our mentors including Mrs. Unni Siemensen original founder of Scanway Catering for her continued support towards Taste of Mauritius Catering. With everyone’s help this dream was made possible!
Out of the total sum of money raised that evening, $711.00 was donated to The Adsum for Women and Children and $800.00 to The Association for the Welfare of Orphans and Handicapped. Funds will be used to supply basic needs and food; to assist with Social Aid; to assist with secondary schooling, and educational material; to assist with acquiring medical equipment such as wheelchairs. HUGE thank-yous to you for your contributions and for purchasing tickets for these two amazing causes.

The evening was incredibly positive, joyous and celebratory; everything we had hoped for! From the hors d’oeuvres, lavish spread of different dishes, drinks, music and the returning group who performed Mauritian Sega… we couldn’t have been more please with the outcome of a, once again, sold out event!
In addition to the culture-sharing experience, this event once again served as a chance to also “give back”, by giving our network of family, friends and amazing customers an opportunity to help others in need. The long-term goal for our “Mauritian Nights” in NS are to also chose a different project/cause/charity every time we host it and donate the raised funds that evening to the one very local group in Nova Scotia and another in Mauritius.

2015 “Mauritian Night” in Halifax – An Absolute Success!
T’was a memorable gathering in a beautifully Mauritian-inspired decorated indoor setting at the St. Mary’s Boat Club in Halifax.
The very 1st “Mauritian Night” here, this past November 14th, in Nova Scotia…
sharing our rich and world-renowned Mauritian cuisine and culture!
Beneath the natural beauties of Mauritius’ landscape, lies another, but sometime forgotten, gem: the Mauritian Culture. anonymous
An UNBELIEVABLY SUCCESSFUL event!
From the ambience to the hors d’oeuvres, lavish spread of different buffet-style dinner dishes, desserts, drinks, music and even an outstanding Mauritian Sega Performance (surprise of the evening – see the video of it here!)… we wanted to make sure to capture the way we’d normally gather and celebrate in Mauritius, and replicate it here in NS! The atmosphere was incredible, positive, joyous and celebratory. Everything we had hoped for!
This was not only a chance, for all living here, to experience a sliver of our exotic tiny multi-cultural Mauritian island, half way across the world, but it was also a fantastic opportunity to bring the few Mauritians living in Nova Scotia together, including the University Students from Mauritius pursuing their studies in the Maritimes.
No doubt that the main goal here was that of a culture-sharing experience, however… this event served as a chance to “give back” as well, by giving our network of family, friends and amazing customers an opportunity to help others in need. The long-term goal for the future “Mauritian Night” event will be to host it annually and each year chose a different project/cause/charity, one in Nova Scotia and another in Mauritius, to donate the raised funds to.
This year The Bay Refugee Project, in NS, and the Gayasingh Ashram Care Home, in Mauritius, were our first recipients. We are pleased to announce that a Total Sum of $1,345.00 Canadian Dollars was raised this past Saturday evening from our Mauritian Raffle Ticket sales which included some phenomenal prizes donated by Air Mauritius, Mr. Donald Payen, Mr. Rama Poonoosamy from Immedia Group, Concorde Mauritius, Dr. Deva and Mrs. Ruby Veerassamy. We cannot thank you all enough, for all your help and incredible generosity, supporting us in this initiative… all for great causes.
We want also to personally THANK EVERYONE who was there in attendance that evening, including Deputy Mayor and Dictrict 13 Councillor Matt Whitman for coming and saying a few words to our guests that evening. There are so many more people who helped in the success of this event… ALL the volunteers; every staff member who worked very hard; close friends and family members, outside vendors, and specially Mrs. Unni Siemensen from Scanway Catering for ABSOLUTELY ALL the support Taste of Mauritius Catering received to make this dream possible.
Out of the total sum of money raised that evening, $1,000.00 was donated to The Bay Refugee Project on November 17 and the remaining $345.00 will be sent on December 10 to the Gayasingh Ashram. HUGE thank-yous to everyone for their contributions and for purchasing tickets for these two amazing causes.
Our Congratulations go to:
Carla Heggie – 1st Prize Raffle Winner
Cindy Venema-Midgley – 2nd Prize Raffle Winner and
Kothaipillai – 3rd Prize Raffle Winner
Look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s Mauritian Night!
