Chicken Kalia
Kalia is a Mauritian middle-eastern influenced dish often referred to as a “light” Biryani because of the similarity in spices used as well as their methods of cooking for both the Kalia and Biryani dishes. Essentially it is a Biryani without the rice if you will!
If you have had Biryani before, or have heard of the dish and of how amazing it is… you are in for an absolute treat with this Chicken Kalia! It is cooked with a blend of mildly sweet and spicy flavours after marinating the chicken and potatoes in plain yogurt, fresh mint and coriander, Iranian saffron, and a few more flavour-rich ingredients; and is typically eaten with aromatic basmati rice or roti accompanied with different chutneys, salads, or pickles on the side. Truly divine!
Kalias, just like Biryanis, are in fact such special dishes that they are usually prepared and served on special occasions in Mauritius such as the muslim Eid festival and other celebratory events.
